Shipwrecks, Gaols and Industry

Highlights in this area relate to the maritime and convict history of the island.

Stand in front of the Sirius Monument and look out to the HMS Sirius wreck site (19). The monument is built from bricks salvaged from the ruin of Captain Arthur Phillip's House in England, brought to Australia in 1988.

Walk through the New Gaol ruins (20) and Prisoner's Barracks ruins (21).

The Sirius Museum (22) holds the most significant display of First Fleet cultural heritage material held anywhere in Australia and its territories. This is open to the public from 11am to 3pm Monday to Saturday.

Further evidence of convict industry is seen in the Lumber Yard (23), site of the notorious 1846 cooking pot riot, and in the Salt House ruins (27) and Lime Kiln ruins (24).
